How McGraw Hill Connect Assignments Work

Connect assignments can include homework, quizzes, SmartBook work, multi-part problems, and instructor-created activities. The rules shown before you begin—availability, due date, attempts, time limit, and scoring—control how that assignment behaves.

Check these details before starting

  • Availability window: when the assignment opens and closes.
  • Due date: when work is expected; late submission rules may be separate.
  • Attempts: whether you get one try or several.
  • Time limit: a timer may continue even if you close the tab.
  • Navigation: some assignments allow free movement; others require questions in order.

Why is an assignment unavailable?

It may not have opened, may already be closed, may require an LMS launch, or may be restricted by your instructor. Refreshing cannot override those settings. Confirm the dates and course section, then contact the instructor if the restriction looks wrong.

How do I know it submitted?

Wait for Connect's completion or submission confirmation and save a screenshot. Do not treat a filled answer field as proof of submission. For multi-part questions, review every tab or section before submitting.

Multi-part and fill-in-the-blank questions

Each visible input usually expects its own value. If a sentence has three boxes, distribute the three parts across the boxes instead of pasting the complete phrase into the first one. Follow labels, units, rounding instructions, and accepted formats exactly.

Common assignment formats

Connect can deliver ordinary homework, quizzes, SmartBook adaptive work, multi-part numerical problems, matching, dropdown or fill-in activities, and instructor-created content. Some courses also launch external publisher or third-party tools from a Connect or LMS page.

The format affects how completion is measured. A quiz may finish when an attempt is submitted. SmartBook can use a progress target that continues beyond a fixed number of questions. A multi-part problem may require every subpart before the page is complete. Look for the activity's own completion message.

Attempts and scoring rules

Multiple attempts do not always mean the highest attempt automatically wins. An instructor may choose the highest, latest, first, or average score, or may apply a separate policy in the school LMS. Read the displayed rule before using another attempt.

Some questions can deduct points for repeated tries or hints. Others provide feedback without a penalty. Do not assume that behavior from one course carries into another.

Due date versus availability

The due date tells you when work is expected. The availability window controls when the activity can be opened or submitted. A course may allow late work after the due date, close exactly at the due date, or use a separate final cutoff.

Record both dates. If the page displays only one and the syllabus says something different, ask the instructor which controls. The instructor is the only person who can change course availability or add an attempt.

Timed assignments

Do not press the final start button merely to inspect a timed assignment. Prepare the connection, power, allowed materials, and uninterrupted work period first. A timer may continue even when the browser closes or the connection drops.

If a technical problem occurs, capture the error and time immediately. Relaunch through the required course route, but do not repeatedly start new attempts unless the instructions say to do so.

SmartBook completion

SmartBook is adaptive. The activity can respond to accuracy and confidence while working toward a required completion target. Continue until SmartBook itself shows that the required progress is complete. A closed tab or answered screen is not the same as a recorded completion.

AutoGraw has supported SmartBook workflow controls, but no tool can guarantee coverage for every layout or answer. Manual review and fallback remain important. Read what AutoGraw is for its supported question types and limits.

Submission and grade synchronization

After submitting, wait for the confirmation or result. Save its timestamp and attempt number. If Connect is integrated with another LMS, the score may take time to appear there, or the LMS may apply weighting and manual adjustments.

The Connect grade guide explains how to distinguish an unsubmitted attempt, unreleased feedback, manual grading, and a synchronization delay.

External and instructor-created activities

Some assignment links open content from another service or a custom tool. The rules, saving behavior, privacy notices, and technical support for that activity can differ from ordinary Connect pages. Read the destination's instructions and do not assume a Connect-specific feature works there.

If an external tool returns a score to Connect or the school LMS, save confirmation on both sides when possible. A successful activity result and a failed grade transfer are separate problems.

Accessibility and accommodations

Use the formal accommodation process through your institution for additional time, alternate formats, assistive technology, or other required changes. Confirm that the accommodation appears in the specific assignment before starting a timed attempt.

Browser zoom, screen readers, keyboard navigation, and other accessibility tools can behave differently across activity formats. Complete any practice or system check early enough to report a problem.

A reliable assignment workflow

  1. Launch from the correct course route.
  2. Read dates, attempts, timer, scoring, and required software.
  3. Prepare the connection and allowed materials.
  4. Complete every required part.
  5. Submit and wait for confirmation.
  6. Save the attempt number and timestamp.
  7. Verify the grade in the authoritative gradebook.

That sequence is intentionally simple. Most avoidable problems happen because one of those transitions was assumed rather than confirmed.
